I`m in the early stages of designing a horn system and have been unable to find any info on the subject of boxing in horns leaving only the mouths exposed. Is there anything about doing this that would cause degredation in the sound ? My main fear is that the box surrounding the horn would create a baffle with negative results. The advantage in my case of using a boxed in configuration would be purely one of esthetics as these horns would be set up in my living room. However, I certainly would not like to end up with the drawback of diminished sound for the sake of esthetics.If anyone cares to shed some light on this subject it would be greatly appreciated. 11-14-2006 Post does not mapped to Knowledge Tree drdna San Francisco, California Posts 526 Joined on 10-29-2005 Post #: 2 Post ID: 3145 Reply to: 3139 horns in boxes Well, a lot of horns are put into box enclosures of course.  This is really a complicated subject.  The baffle must be dealt with in a manner similarly for all loudspeakers so designed of course.  More interestingly is the potential for the back wave to become a problem in a poorly designed enclosure, although well made compression drivers should minimize this problem.  I would also hazard to say that for any system with substantial extension to the bass frequencies, the boxes would be gigantic and IMHO huge ugly boxes, but who am I to judge?
