Simply moving the speakers across the room produces a completely different listening experience. The sound itself is generally fine, but the room is not. The room and the sound don't seem to interact properly; they behave like two completely separate entities. It's not spectacular hi-fi, but the problem isn't the sound I'm looking for—it's how the room responds to it.
After four days of thinking it over, I decided to close off the opening on the right, creating a continuous wall. The plaster is still drying, but I've done some initial listening, and it seems this modification should solve the problem.
Now I'm wondering what I could put inside the 2×4 stud cavities to make the wall a better acoustic surface for a corner horn.
